The story of one tunnel

This story was told to me by my German friend from Leonberg – Frowin Junker (in the photos)

In November 1938 in the South of Germany a tunnel was opened not far from Leonberg. It was 318 meters long and became the first in the history of the country tunnel with a highway layed across it. During the 2-nd World War starting from spring 1944 till April 1945 the Tunnel was used to manufacture wings for German fighter aircrafts Messerschmitt. The fascist command took a decision to relocate the engineering assembling in the Tunnel to defend the manufacture from air-raids of the forces of allied members. Due to the lack of workforce in Leonberg a concentration camp was created, where more than 3000 of convicts from 24 countries were brought by force. The majority of them came from Poland, USSR, France, Hungary, the Balkans and Germany. 389 prisoners died during the forced labor in this concentration camp.After the war the Tunnel was used for a great while for the highway. About 10 years ago it was closed. In 2005 on the initiative of KZ-Gedenkstätteninitiative Leonberg e.V. a Wall of Memory was erected at the entrance of the tunnel with the names of all prisoners embossed on it. In 2008 a museum of Memory was opened.

История одного тоннеля

Эту историю рассказал мне мой немецкий друг из Леонберга – Frowin Junker (на фотографиях).

В ноябре 1938 года на юге Германии недалеко от города Леонберг был открыт тоннель. Длинной 318 метров, он стал первым в истории страны тоннелем, через который был проведён автобан. Во время Второй Мировой войны, с весны 1944 по апрель 1945 года, этот тоннель стал местом производства крыльев для немецких истребителей Messerschmitt. Фашистское командование приняло решение переместить туда конструкторскую сборку для того, чтобы защитить производство от воздушных налетов Сил Союзников. Из-за нехватки рабочей силы в Леонберге был создан концентрационный лагерь, в который свезли более трех тысяч заключенных из 24 стран, преимущественно из Польши, СССР, Франции, Венгрии, Балкан и Германии. 389 человек умерли во время работ в этом концлагере. По прошествии войны тоннель ещё долгое время использовался для автобана. Около десяти лет назад тоннель закрыли. В 2005 году по инициативе Memorial Initiative the concentration camp Leonberg (KZ-Gedenkstätteninitiative Leonberg e.V.) у входа в тоннель была возведена Стена Памяти, на которой выбиты имена всех заключенных бывшего концлагеря. А в 2008 году в тоннеле открылся Музей Памяти.
